The Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI) tackles the grand societal challenges related to sustainable agricultural development and food security in the face of climate change. Research projects funded by FACCE-JPI join forces to provide innovative solutions and recommendations on a global level for both policy makers and farmers to solve these challenges that cannot be solved solely on the national level.
Research projects funded through FACCE-JPI actions are targeting the needs of everyday farming as well as global policy making in the face of a changing climate. The results accomplished so far in these projects provide information for both animal as well as crop production sectors.
The expectation is that there will be both environmental (reduced GHG emissions) and economic (increased performance and profitability) benefits from the projects.
“For example improved agricultural modelling, advanced by FACCE MACSUR Knowledge Hub, contributes to alerting policymakers, farm advisors and farmers to likely future trends, both threats and opportunities”, says FACCE-JPI Chair Hartmut Stalb.
The 3 year research projects, most of which have been running since 2014, already have provided results. Now they are joining forces to formulate policy and practice recommendations based on their findings.
Common denominators: adaptation, mitigation of GHG emissions
Common key topics for these projects have been adaptation and resilience of European agriculture to climate change, and mitigation and contribution of the agriculture sector to decrease GHG emissions in crop and livestock production to contribute to meeting the 1.5–2°C targets.
Regarding key climate policy-relevant findings, the FACCE-JPI funded projects are pertinent to two major climate related policies: the EU Climate and energy package action and COP21 follow-up, and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the subsequent CAP 2020+.
To formulate the common recommendations, FACCE-JPI is organizing a series of workshops gathering together researchers and stakeholders, which will give rise to policy and practice briefs. The first workshop on climate will take place on 22 March 2017 in Brussels.
“We expect policy makers, farmers and farm advisors, as well as breeding and agri-food companies to be interested in the results created through these projects”, says Hartmut Stalb.
